Munich, 03.07.2024. A convincing performance from SSR Performance at the 100th anniversary of the world-famous 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium: the team from Munich finished eighth out of 66 starters in its endurance debut. After a good performance over the entire 24 hours, it crossed the finish line as the best-placed Porsche together with drivers Matt Campbell (Australia), Frédéric Makowiecki (France) and Mathieu Jaminet (France). "Many thanks to the entire crew and everyone involved! We really learnt a lot at our endurance racing debut. The co-operation with Herberth Motorsport was extremely harmonious. We travelled to Spa to win the classic. Unfortunately, we also had to learn the hard way in our first 24-hour race. In the end, we were still the best Porsche team and were able to score important points for the Stuttgart-based team and Matt Campbell in the IGTC championship. I would like to thank the entire team for their passion and fighting spirit," summarised team owner Stefan Schlund.
After a thrilling qualifying session, the Porsche 911 GT3 R with starting number 92 started the classic race on the Ardennes rollercoaster in Spa from 18th place instead of tenth due to a penalty. The team was fully focussed right from the start, as SSR Performance had already worked its way up to 14th place in the overall standings after around three hours. Despite difficult conditions with lots of rain and a number of full-course yellow phases, the drivers showed strong nerves during their stints and made no mistakes. Many exciting duels ensued and by the middle of the race the trio was already in eleventh place. Having survived the night unscathed, the team kept a cool head in the final section and kept out of the many skirmishes on the track. After 24 hours and 478 laps on the 7,004-kilometre, newly asphalted circuit, the team secured the best result for the Porsche brand at the anniversary edition of the Belgian endurance classic with eighth place. Despite a time penalty, the gap to the winning car after 24 hours of driving was less than one lap. "I am proud of the entire team. An endurance race like this is a different kind of challenge to the sprint races in the DTM. Nevertheless, the team did a flawless job with the strategy and the pit stops. The heavy rain in the dark made for extremely difficult conditions and chaotic situations on the track. We survived these phases unscathed and were able to move up a few places during the race," explains Mario Schuhbauer.
